This year in ISM, I am studying the topic of sports broadcast. Through my extended research, informational interviews, and knowledge of sports, I have come to the realization that a resume is not enough to showcase my sports broadcasting abilities. With everything moving digitally, social media is the new mechanism for branding. Platforms such as YouTube, are increasingly becoming popular and are a great way for individuals to build a brand and market themselves to the world. Creating a reel is a technique that most aspiring broadcasters use in order to show future employers their abilities. A reel is a compilation of videos that showcase an individual actively broadcasting information. Reels outweigh resumes because they give employers the opportunity to watch how you articulate information on camera, rather than what you have accomplished on paper.
“I’ve always had a thirst for knowledge.” -Emmitt Smith. Individuals like myself who plan on pursuing a career in sports broadcast need something they can reflect on, learn from, and study. As a result, for my ISM original work, I will be uploading videos of myself conducting sideline reports and sports related news discussions on my YouTube channel called “BriTV.” The purpose of this channel is to allow me to practice my broadcasting skills on and off the camera. The Emmitt Smith quote really exemplifies this idea because it symbolizes the desire to never stop learning, which is the motive behind my channel. This channel would be useful for athletes and sports fans all across America. Along with that, the creation of this reel will further my ISM research because it will give me something to show to professionals during my networking process. My original work and final product encapsulate a higher level of thinking because I am synthesizing various components of my research by combining all of it into one reel.
